March .AU Domain Name Statistics

April 16, 2019

More statistics are now available relating to the .au namespace, providing additional insights.

Usually auDA registry reports are pretty light on information regarding Australian domain names, but for the last couple of months a new report has been added - registrations by namespace. This has been accompanied this month by another publication - Community Geographic Domain Name (CGDN) stats.

Registry Report - March 2019

The Registry Report indicates 45,423 .au domains were created during March 2019, up 4.7% year-over-year - so quite a jump. Total domains under management as at the end of March reached 3,188,586; up 1.8% year over year. More from the Registry Report can be viewed here.

Registrations By Namespace - March 2019

Unsurprisingly, .com.au registrations continue to lead by a very large margin - in fact it makes up close to 83% of all active registrations. Here's how the various extensions shaped up in March and how they compared year over year.

Community Geographic Domain Names - March 2019

A Community Geographic Domain Name (CGDN) is website address that includes the locality name and the state, such as yourtown.sa.au. CGDNs are often used by resident associations for conveying information and promoting a locality. You can learn more about CGDN names here.

CGDN names are rather rare beasties as you can see by the active numbers for March:

In total, there are only 212 CGDN's currently registered, comprising less than 0.007% of all .AU registrations.

auDA's archive of registry reports, dating right back to 2002, can be found here.

Trivia: the very first report, published for FY 2002/03 Q1, notes a total of just 295,607 Australian domains registered - and of those, 266,307 were .com.au. At that point, there were just 14 fully accredited registrars - today that number has grown to 38.
