Steady as she goes - that best sums up the state of Australia's domain name space in January 2019.
According to monthly registry statistics recently released by auDA* covering January 2019, a total of 40,236 domains were created last month. While that figure was up significantly on December 2018's 32,160; it was down on January 2018's 32,160 (-0.4%).
Overall, at the end of January 2019, the total number of domains under management in the .au space had reached 3,171,919; up 1.5% on January 2018's figure of 3,124,601.

Up until the end of June last year, the long-time operator of .au was AusRegistry. The reins were handed over to Afilias in July; marking the end of an era for .au. The transfer of operations to Afilias was a mammoth task, one that earned the new operator a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
As for what else has been happening regarding the .au space over the last month, Afilias and auDA met with Australia's registrars for the first time this year on February 7. On the agenda were discussions concerning building awareness of .au, namespace compliance, and registry statistics and trends.
The .au name space has been around for more than thirty years now. While there's certainly been some ups and downs behind the scenes over the decades, it remains strong. The .au extension maintains a good reputation and enjoys a high level of awareness both locally and abroad. It also has the distinction of being among the world's top ten country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) as at December 2018 in terms of the number of domains registered.
