1 in 4 Australians Have A Domain Name

October 15, 2013

A survey of more than 10,000 Australians has found one in four have at least one domain name registered.

According to the survey report, when Australians decide to acquire a name; more often than not they register .AU domains.  74% of  registrants choose .AU for their online presence and 80% of this group uses their name for business.

84% of .AU domain name owners stated registering a name is an easy process.

While 1 in 4 Australians may have domains, the findings indicate there is significant room for growth and the industry needs to further investigate any perceived barriers; particularly in relation to local businesses.

Another related interesting point to emerge was  two-thirds of respondents said they did not have a need for a domain name; yet 10% of that group owned a business and 6% operated a blog.

There is also a significant imbalance when it comes to registrants and gender - with males almost twice as likely to own a domain name compared to females.

The .AU name space continues to maintain a high level of trust - of the thousands of respondents who indicated they do discriminate their credit card usage based on zone; the .AU zone was indicated as most trusted.

It won't come as a surprise, but 95% of respondents strongly identify with the .au ccTLD as being representative of Australia. There are now more 2.7 million .AU domains registered and the .au ccTLD was the world's ninth largest at the end of last year.

The survey report was prepared by AusRegistry, .au Domain Administration (auDA) and Effective Measure.

AusRegistry, through .au Domain Administration Limited (auDA), provides accreditation to domain name registrars. auDA is the policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space.

The report can be viewed in full here (PDF).
