.EU Celebrates 7 Years

April 5, 2013

About to head into its 7th year, .EU domain name registrations now number more than 3.74 million.

The .EU registry; EURid, says of the 1.84 million registrants, 25% have registered more than one name. With a renewal rate above 80%, EURid believes the extension is "considered a valuable asset to the domain name industry and the European public".

In its recently released report for Q4, 2012; .EU finished last year with 3.70 million registrations - a 5.4% growth rate compared with the previous year.

EURID General Manager Marc Van Wesemael commented that given the growth rate was comparable to the previous period and the ongoing global economic crisis, the performance was a "notable achievement".

During the fourth quarter, the total number of .EU  registrations increased in 22 of the 27 EU Member States.

Residents of Germany hold the most .EU registrations, followed by those in the Netherlands and then the United Kingdom. French Guiana residents held the least number of .EU domains; just 42 in total.

7.4 .EU domain names are held per one thousand people in the European Union, whereas 99.7 country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) are held per thousand EU residents. The countries with the fastest relative growth in year over year registrations were Malta (28%), Slovenia (24%) and Slovakia (23%).

The EU extension was added to the root zone of the internet Domain Name System (DNS) in May 2005. While .EU registrations were offered starting on 7 December 2005, applications were on a strictly limited basis. On 7 April 2006, EURid opened the .eu TLD for general registration.

The were a total of 67 employees working at EURid's four offices (Diegem, Pisa, Prague and Stockholm) at the end of Q4 2012. By the end of the quarter, there were a total of 787 .EU accredited registrars operating.
