.EU Domain Names Most Often Registered Close To Home

September 25, 2011

According to an analysis performed in August by the .eu registry, EURid;, 84% of .eu domain name registrations occur via registrars based in the European Union.

66% of .eu domain name registrants selected a registrar from their own European Union Nation country and 18% chose a registrar from a different EU country. Just 16% registered a .eu name with a registrar located outside the EU.

According to Marc Van Wesemael, EURid's General Manager, it's generally believed most people prefer to use a local .eu accredited registrar in case they ever need support; so they will be able to receive it in their own language. Another advantage for registrants is their local registrar will operate in the same time zone.

Even in cases where .eu registrations occurred outside the European Union, registrants may not realise the company they are dealing with exists outside the EU, or, as can be the case with some companies offering Australian domain name registration, a middleman reseller and associated support services are located in another country.

In other .eu news, EURid recently reported there were 188 537 new .eu registrations in Q2 2011, with a total of 3.35 million registered domain names by the end of the quarter. This represents a 4.2% increase compared the end of Q2 2010. Renewal rates averaged 84% during the period, higher than the industry average.

The top 10 countries accounted for 86.2% of all .eu registrations during the quarter. Germany remains the leader in .eu domain name usage (1,045,215 names), followed by residents of the Netherlands (447,546) and the United Kingdom (310, 357).

There were a total of 864 .eu accredited registrars by the end of the quarter.

EURid is the organisation appointed by the European Commission to operate the .eu top-level domain (TLD).
