.EU Domain Names Go Green

 28 January 2014

EURid, the registry for the .eu top-level domain, is playing a role in financially contributing to the construction of wind turbines.

EURID has purchased verified carbon credits that will go towards the construction of 75 wind turbines in the region of Gujarat, India.

"We are pleased to be the first European registry to reduce its CO2 emissions and we look forward to making this a best practice in our industry," said .eu's External Relations Manager Giovanni Seppia.

EURid undertook an audit of its paper and energy consumption for heating, air conditioning, transport and other aspects of its operations and the greenhouse related emissions calculated. All resulting figures were then divided by the number of .eu domain names under management. An independent third party confirmed EURid's carbon footprint emissions for 2012 were 11.13 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent for each .eu domain name in the registry.

While the online world allows many of us to reduce our carbon emissions in terms of activities such as trips to stores or being able to work from home; all the energy that goes into keeping the web alive is considerable. It's estimated the number of servers in data centres in the USA is increasing by approximately 10 per cent a year. With much of the world's power supply still being generated by coal-fired power stations; the resulting IT-related impact on greenhouse gas emissions cannot be disregarded.

EURid says it will also follow  recommendations provided during the audit to further reduce energy consumption where possible and use greener means of transport. The registry will start assessing its 2013 CO2 emissions in Q1 2014, with the goal of compensating them by the end of Q2 this year.

EURid's states its data centre in the Netherlands has been housed by one of Europe's greenest providers since late 2010.

Further details of EURid's green commitments can be viewed here: eurid.eu/green
