Sedo's Market Study for the first quarter of 2010 reveals an 18.6 per cent increase in domain name sales on the fourth quarter of 2009 and a record number of domain names sold in a quarter.
The top priced domain name sale globally was poker.org, fetching USD $1 million, followed by credit.fr at 587,500 euros and pilot.com for USD$300,000. Top selling categories for domain names were names relating to tobacco, computer software and geographic specific names.
During the first quarter of this year, nearly 12,000 domain names changed hands via SEDO, with .com, making up 76 per cent of all sales. The leading country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) was .de (Germany), making up 38 per cent of country specific extensions. The European Union's .eu extension was the second most traded ccTLD extension at 36%, followed by the .co.uk in the third place at 13 per cent.
Liesbeth Mack-de Boer, CSO of Sedom, said the numbers show the domain name industry is in top shape and industry changes such as the introduction of one and two character domains and the launch of International Domain Names that use non-Latin character sets have helped boost the sector.
