Latest Domain Name Industry Brief Highlights

Published November 30, 2010

According to the latest domain name industry report from Verisign, the third quarter of this year ended with over 201.8 million domain name registrations across all Top Level Domains (TLDs), an increase of 3.8 million domain names over the second quarter.

Verisign says that registrations have grown by 13.3 million, or 7 percent over the past year.

.com and .net saw strong aggregate growth, with a combined total of 103 million domain names. New registrations of these extensions totalled over 7.5 million. While this represented a 6 percent decrease over the second quarter, it is in line with third quarter seasonality. The .com/.net renewal rate for the third quarter was 72.8 percent, down slightly from 73.2 percent for the second quarter.

Of the .com and .net names, Verisign estimates that 22% resolve to one page web sites (including under construction and parked domains), 66% are multiple page sites and 12% of .com and .net names do not resolve to a live website.

The largest TLDs in terms of base size at the end of September 2010 were , .com, .de (Germany), .net, .uk (United Kingdom), .org, .info, .cn, .nl (Netherlands), .eu (European Union) and .ru (Russian Federation); respectively.

Among the 20 largest country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs), the Russian Federation, Brazil, Argentina and Australian domain names exceeded 4 percent quarter over quarter growth. Australia's .au space also exceeded 20 percent year-over-year growth.
