Don't Be A Domain Name Typo Victim

November 12, 2018

Spelling mistakes and typos happen to the best of us. But one example where it's particularly important to get spelling correct is in your choice of domain name.

Registration of a domain name can be an exciting and nerve-wracking thing if it's your first time around, even though the process is quite simple and straightforward. It's just something new and it can seem a little overwhelming.

You've found a name you like and you're in a rush to grab it before someone else does. You complete the registration form carefully and then submit it - only to discover once it is registered, the name is incorrectly spelled.

That's a best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is when the spelling error or typo goes undetected and the address is put into use. While not a very common occurrence as it is usually picked up before prime-time, it does happen.

The eye can see one thing and the brain translate it to another - it instead "sees" what we think it should; and sometimes consistently. This is something that even those who write for a living will tell you is quite common. Once the error is pointed out, it can be hard to fathom why you didn't pick up on it in the first place.

While it's not a huge deal if you haven't started using the domain, it can mean wasted time and money as once you've registered a name there are no refunds. What could also happen in the interim is another party may register the domain you actually wanted.

So, before you hit the purchase button, take a few extra seconds to check the name very carefully to ensure it is spelled correctly.

Other common mistakes (or things probably best to avoid) when selecting a domain include:
