Australian Domain Names Continue To Grow

May 9, 2016

According to the latest "Behind the Dot: State of the .au Domain" from AusRegistry, the .AU namespace saw an increase of domains under management of 3% to the end of March this year.

Much of the growth was thanks to the Point Piper of Australian domains; .COM.AU; which grew by 3.8%. While it's certainly a good result, it's lower than previous.

"Overall the annualised growth rate remains fairly low compared  to 6 percent at the same time last year. Partly contributing to this reduction is the contraction of for the sixth consecutive quarter," states the report.

The number of .NET.AU website addresses contracted by 3.1 per cent during the same period.

As the .AU space starts getting on in years, the proportion of domains that have reached the ripe old age six years or more has increased substantially. The report also points out Australia has a very high number of names held per capita - around one address for every 12.7 Australians.

The latest Behind the Dot: State of the .au Domain can be viewed here (PDF). The current issue also takes a look at domains and search engine optimization, keyword names, the use of hashtags in web addresses, strengthening a brand with .AU, various research and surveys and much more.

AusRegistry is not a registrar - it's the body responsible for creating and managing the software and infrastructure to ensure the stability and integrity of Internet operations in Australia.

* The total number of .AU domain names registered had reached 3,055,073 according to the auDA web site at the time of writing. The registry reached 3 million domain names in June last year.

Trivia: 81% of Australian businesses use a .AU website address
