Australia Still A Top Country For .ORG Domains

August 29, 2014

Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and France continue to lead as the top five markets for .ORG domain registrants outside of the USA says Public Interest Registry (PIR).

PIR, operator of the .ORG name space, has released its latest Dashboard report, covering the first half of this year.

Initially mostly used for not for profit organisations in the USA, the .org extension is available to everyone, for any purpose as long as the application falls within the general guidelines. For example, businesses are using .ORG - around 5.4% of registrations are connected to retail trade. A large percentage of .ORG domains are used in connection with information, media and communications.

The report states over the past twelve months, the total number of .org domains under management increased to 10,428,027 - a 1.4 percent rise in registrations. Australians hold 349,593 of those registrations - 3.4% of the overall total.

Registrations from China, Japan and India saw significant growth for the first half of this year and now comprise more than 6 percent of the total .ORG market.

Blended renewal rates for .ORG domains remained strong at 73.9%.

The .ORG extension remains the third largest TLD (Top Level Domain).

"After three decades, we're thrilled to see that .org remains the domain of choice for organisations serving the public interest," said Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry. "We're optimistic that in the year ahead, more and more organisations, individuals and around the globe will turn to .org to share their passions, ideas and causes".

Trivia: The first .org domain was; which was registered on July 10, 1985; just a few months after the world's first domain name;, was registered.
