City Of New York Snags .NYC Domain

July 3, 2013

New York's Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has announced the City of New York has been successful in securing its own geographic top-level domain - .NYC.

The City of New York is one of the first in the world to be given the nod by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for a geographic Top Level Domain (TLD).

"Having our own unique, top-level domain - .nyc- puts New York City at the forefront of the digital landscape and creates new opportunities for our small businesses," said Mayor Bloomberg. "They'll now be able to identify themselves as connected to New York City, one of the world's strongest and most prestigious brands."

Much like registering a has residency restrictions; in order to be eligible to register a .NYC domain name, registrants must live within the boundaries of  the City of New York or have a registered presence in the City; such as maintaining an office or other facility in the city.

"The new .nyc domain will help promote small businesses throughout the five boroughs in ways that wouldn't have been possible before," said Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver.

Fees are yet to be determined and registration for .NYC names will open late this year.

As recently as 2009, only two geographic Top Level Domains (GeoTLDs) existed; but many more have been proposed under the new gTLD program; including .berlin, .london, .paris , .africa, .moscow and some relating to Australia.

In other ICANN news related to geographic domain names; specifically country and territory names, the body has announced the ccNSO (Country Code Names Supporting Organisation) has completed its work and is now seeking feedback and input from the ICANN community.

After reviewing submitted comments to determine whether its report needs to modified, the Study Group expects to formally publish its Final Report in September 2013.
