70,000 .EE Domain Names Registered

July 19, 2013

The .EE registry is celebrating this milestone; but what does .EE represent?

With hundreds of different country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs), you would be forgiven for not knowing what all of them represent; particularly some of the extensions that don't have a huge presence as yet.

The .EE extension represents Estonia; a state in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered  by the Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea, Latvia and Russia.

Estonia has a population of just 1.34 million people - so 70,000 domain names is quite a strong showing.

According to the Estonian Internet Foundation; which handles the management of Estonia's top-level domain, there are 54.4 .ee domain names per 1,000 Estonians; a higher per capita rate than Latvia and Lithuania.

The extension was introduced in 1992 and was operated by EENet until July 2010 when the Estonian Internet Foundation took over the role of managing .ee ccTLD registry functions.

Previously only a single domain could be registered by a party, but new rules allowed an unlimited number of domains to be registered and citizens can also now register domains directly under .EE.

While foreigners can also now register a .EE domain, the administrative contact must have an Estonian ID code and have a residence in the country.

With the introduction of IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) features in 2011; additional characters such as diacritics used in the Estonian language were then able to be used in a .ee domain name.

The Estonian Internet Foundation says during this year, an average of 1,130 .EE domain names have been registered each month; 13 percent more than during the same period last year.

Trivia: The hugely popular online communications software application, Skype, was created by Estonian developers and is still mainly developed in Estonia.
