Q3 Domain Name Market Report Released

November 6, 2012

Median sales prices for the most popular generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) showed substantial improvement during the third quarter according to the latest domain name market report from SEDO.

The domain marketplace saw a year over year sales price increase for .COM domains of 41 percent to $2,225. Prices for .NET and .ORG domains  both increased by 44 percent.

However, the average sale price of .NET sales dropped almost $1,000 in the third quarter, likely meaning the high average experienced the previous quarter was due to a handful of very high value transactions distorting the figures.

While the strongest sales volume during the third quarter happened in July (2,839 domain sales), September generated fewer domain sales, but a much higher overall sales value of  $5.85 million.

Domains priced $2,500 and higher constituted 14%  of sales, while 46 percent of total sales during Q3 were for domains priced below the $500 mark.

In total, Q3 saw 8,181 transactions on SEDO, representing a total sales value of $15.1 million. The average sale price was approximately $1,900, with a median of $650.

The highest price paid for a domain name during the last quarter via the service was around AUD $337,000 at current exchange rates.

SEDO is primarily frequented by US residents (30%). Australians do have a presence in the marketplace, albeit small at just 2% of buyers last quarter. SEDO states 160 countries were represented in terms of buyers during Q3.

While some of the above sales figures are impressive, registrants hoping to score a high price for any domains they wish to sell will need to have stand-out names and promote effectively in order to secure the big bucks as SEDO currently has over 15 million listings - it's a very competitive environment.
