Configuring FTP - Filezilla

FileZilla FTP client is a free FTP solution allowing you to upload files to your Domain Registration Services website hosting account.

Important: If you are using Microsoft FrontPage to build your web site, do not FTP file(s) to the server; you must use FrontPage / SharePoint services to upload your site. If you us FileZilla or any other FTP client or upload in FrontPage using FTP, you will break any FrontPage specific functions such as forms, counters or WebBots.

If you do not have a copy of the FileZilla FTP client, you can download a free copy here.

Once you have downloaded and then installed FileZilla, you will need to configure the software. When starting up the application you will be presented with a window as shown below:

Filezilla main screen

Once you are at this stage, click on File => Site Manager and you will be presented with the window as shown below:

Filezilla Site Manager

Click New Site and then type in your preferred name - it can be anything you choose. Then on the right hand side; configure your connection as shown in following screenshot:

Filezilla main configuration

Note that the details shown above are an example only and the details you need to enter for host, username and password would have been provided to you when you signed up for a hosting account.

Once you have configured the screen above, click on the Advanced tab.

Filezilla advanced configuration

This tab will allow you to specify the directory on the server that you will upload your site to. Unless you have been advised otherwise, this will always be /httpdocs.

The default local directory will be where you have saved your web site to on your computer - use the browse button to navigate to that folder.

Once you have configured this area, click on the Transfer Settings tab.

The screen shot below shows the transfer method you should select. Ensure that your transfer mode is set to Active as shown below:

Once this step has been completed, please click OK and then click on File => Site Manager again and you will now see your newly configured site in the list. Select the site and then click the Connect button.

Once logged in, you can then upload your files stored on your computer on the left hand side of the FileZilla window by selecting the files or folders you wish to upload, right clicking one of them and then left clicking on the Upload option that will appear.
