How many domain names can I register?

The number of domains you can register is unlimited, but there are some general eligibility guidelines depending on the type of domain in question.

.com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au domain extensions

The allocation rules relating to registration of Australian domain names changed some years ago. You can now register multiple Australian domain names under certain conditions. You can register an exact match, abbreviation, and/or acronym of your organisation name, trading name, or trademark. You may also register additional Australian domain names that reflect your: brands, products, services, venue, events, activities, professions or trademarks. The relaxing of multiple domain name registration has been a boon for the industry and registrants alike, while still preserving the integrity of the .au space.

.id.au domain extension

id.au domain names are available for registration to any Australian citizen or resident. Multiple .id.au domains may be registered. An applicant may register his or her initials, personal name or a derivative thereof, or his or her nickname. It's important to note that .id.au names cannot be registered for commercial purposes.

Global domain name registration

The rules regarding multiple .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz domain names are much more relaxed and you can register as many of these as you wish. There are no limits. While .com remains the "Beverly Hills" of extensions, .net, .org, .info and .biz are generally readily accepted by consumers. The .org extension was originally used for non-profits, but now even some ecommerce ventures use it.

Tip: If you're an Australian business, you should register .com.au and .com equivalents of your business name as a website address as soon as possible - before somebody acquires them!
