How to password protect a directory or file

Need to keep prying eyes from a page or pages on your web site? Some web hosts make password protection a time consuming and complex task, but with Domain Registration Services' directory password protection feature, it's a simple thing to do!

Password protecting directories is a two stage process (the following steps can also be viewed in our hosting video tutorials)

Stage 1 - Protecting the directory

  1. Log in to your hosting account control panel.
  2. Click the "Home" link in the left hand menu
  3. Click the "Protected Directories" icon
  4. Enter the name of the directory you wish to protect
  5. Select either non-SSL or SSL. Non-SSL directories will be created in the httpdocs directory and SSL directories will be created in the httpsdocs directory.
  6. Enter "Header Text" if any. This is the text that will be displayed on the dialog box generated when someone tries to access the protected directory.
  7. Click "OK"
  8. You should now be on another screen with  "Add New User" and "Preferences" icons

Stage 2 - Configuring access

  1. Click on the "Add New User" icon
  2. Specify a user name and password that will allow access to the protected area. The password should be from 5 to 14 characters in length.
  3. Click OK and you're done! Your protected directory is ready for you to upload files to.

You can add as many users as you wish.

If you need to change a password in the future; here's what to do:

  1. Back on your hosting account control panel home page, click the Protected Directories icon.
  2. Click on the name of the protected directory.
  3. A list of usernames will appear.
  4. Click on the username
  5. Change the password and click OK.

To remove access access to a protected directory for a particular user:

  1. Back on your hosting account control panel home page, click the Protected Directories icon.
  2. Click on the name of the protected directory.
  3. A list of usernames will appear.
  4. Tick the box next to the user you wish to remove
  5. Click the "Remove Selected" icon
  6. Confirm and click OK.

Password protection is one of the many very useful and free features offered with all Domain Registration Services' web hosting plans! Join the thousands of international and Australian businesses and individuals who not only register domain names with us, but host with us too!
